Edit my M1 portfolio

You can watch our short how-to videos below:

Overview

At M1 you have complete control of your portfolio and can edit your Slices (stocks, ETFs, Pies) at any time.

When editing your portfolio, you have the power to add, remove, or change the target percentages on Slices.

If this is your first portfolio, you can read a step-by-step guide on building your portfolio.

Keep in mind:

  • You can have a maximum of 100 Slices per portfolio.  If your portfolio goes over 100 Slices, you will need to decrease the total number of Slices in the portfolio before you can edit or save your changes.
  • The total target percentage of Slices must equal 100% before you are able to save changes, and each Slice must have a target percentage of at least 1%.
  • Any buy order must equal a minimum of $1.00 per security before a trade will be executed.

Add a Slice

  1. Under the Invest tab, select “Portfolio"
  2. If on mobile, select “Manage Pie"
  3. Select "Edit Pie"
  4. Select the blue "Add Slice" button
  5. Choose any new stock, ETF, or Pie
  6. When you are ready to add your selected Slices to your portfolio, select "Done"

Adjust the target percentages of the Slices in the Pie you are moving Slices to. These allocation changes will occur over time as money flows into your account if Auto-Invest is enabled.

Keep in mind, adjusting your target percentages won‘t initiate a full account rebalance, where holdings are bought and sold to match your new target percentages. If you’d like to do that, learn more about rebalancing your portfolio.

Make sure:

  • Each Slice is allocated at least 1%.
  • The target percentages of all the Slices add up to 100%.

You will not be able to save your changes until the total percentage equals 100%.

Keep in mind, you will also not be able to save a Pie with an inactive security. A security may become inactive after a corporate action.

Remove a Slice

To remove a Slice, select your Slice and press the “remove” button on the right-hand side of your screen.

Removing a Slice will trigger M1 to liquidate that Slice during the next trade window.

When removing a Slice, the proceeds of the liquidation will be reinvested into your Pie based on your target percentages. This will happen regardless of your auto-invest settings.

Move a Slice

To move a Slice or Slices, edit your portfolio on Web. For more information on moving Slices, see this article.

Change target percentages

To update your target percentages, use the “+” and “-” tabs and click “Save.”

Keep in mind, adjusting your target percentages won‘t initiate a full account rebalance, where holdings are bought and sold to match your new target percentages. If you’d like to do that, learn more about rebalancing your portfolio.

Confirm changes

After tapping save, you can review the changes to your portfolio and confirm any removed or added Slices.

Any modified Slices in your portfolio will be summarized for review. To save these changes, you may tap the blue “Confirm” button on the bottom of your screen.

* Utilizing the Moving Slices feature may cause trades to take place in other M1 Invest Accounts you use the same Pie in. Please visit our article on Moving Slices when Pies are used in more than one account for further information

Additionally, securities received after a corporate action or account transfer are unable to be moved to a Pie used in several locations in your portfolio or across M1 Invest Accounts.
