Using Auto-Invest

What is Auto-invest?

With Auto-invest, M1 intelligently allocates money from every deposit to ensure your portfolio stays on track.

That means you can invest cash into your Pie and maintain your investment targets without any manual calculations.

All accounts have Auto-Invest turned on by default and a minimum cash balance of $0 with a $25 minimum threshold required to trade. This means that any time your cash balance meets or exceeds $25, M1 will automatically invest that entire cash balance into your portfolio.

View or change your Auto-invest settings:

Web:

  1. Navigate to the Portfolio tab

  2. Scroll down to the “Automation” section. This is located below your Pie.

  3. Toggle Auto-invest on or off

Mobile:

  1. Navigate to the Portfolio tab

  2. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen

  3. Toggle Auto-invest on or off

What is buying power?

Your M1 Invest buying power is the amount available for trading.

The amount shown on the Invest tab represents current cash plus any pending deposits and minus any pending withdrawal from the account.

A pending sell order will increase buying power for new buy orders and a pending buy order will decrease buying power. Your cash balance will update once the trades execute.

Note: Your buying power will increase based on the current market value of the pie/slice the sell order was placed on. A sell order may be placed for an amount greater than the current market value but buying power will only change depending on the estimated proceeds from the sell.

Auto-invest and minimum cash balance

  • Most M1 clients manage their portfolio with Auto-invest turned on.

Auto-invest my cash over a specific amount

  • You can set a minimum cash balance that will remain uninvested in your account.

  • Trading will be initiated once your cash balance is at least $25 over that set amount.
