You can use the Moving Slices feature to reorganize your investments within a single M1 Invest account. This guide covers when and how to move Slices, important limitations, potential impacts, and frequently asked questions.
Moving Slices helps you better organize your portfolio by transferring investments (Slices) between Pies. While most moves are straightforward, be aware of key scenarios that could trigger trades in other accounts or affect portfolio targets.
When to use the Move Slices feature
Moving a Slice can be helpful if you:
Want to group similar investments together for easier tracking
Adjust your portfolio structure without selling your holdings
Consolidate or reorganize underperforming or over-concentrated Pies
Example: If you’ve created a new “Tech Stocks” Pie and want to move all your technology company Slices from your main Pie into this new grouping, use the Move Slices feature.
Important warnings before moving Slices
Pies in multiple M1 accounts:
If you use the same Pie in multiple M1 accounts (such as both a Taxable and IRA account), moving or editing Slices in one account could trigger trades in others.
Example: Moving a Slice out of a Pie that is linked across accounts will update all places that pie is used. This can result in buying or selling activity—and may cause taxable events in taxable accounts.
Note: You will see the proposed portfolio changes and the resulting actions prior to confirming your changes.
No moves between accounts:
You cannot move Slices between different M1 Invest Accounts. All moves must be within the same account.
No sales or taxable events (Usually):
Moving Slices within a single Pie or account does not typically trigger buys/sells or create a taxable event. The exception is the same Pie used in multiple accounts-scenario above.
Model Portfolios:
You generally cannot move Slices into or out of Model Portfolios.
Crypto:
You cannot move Slices within M1 Crypto Accounts.
How to move Slices between Pies
Follow these steps to move one or more Slices within the same M1 Invest account:
Open Your Portfolio
Go to the “Invest” tab and choose the portfolio containing the Slice you want to move.
Select Edit
On mobile: Swipe up on the bottom of the screen to access the “Edit” button.
Select and Move Slices
Check the box next to the Slice(s) you want to move.
Click the “Move” button.
The first time, you’ll see a quick tutorial pop-up.
Choose a Destination Pie
Select an existing Pie as your destination.
Need to create a new Pie? First, follow the steps here: How to Create and Add a New Pie
After saving and adding a new Pie to your portfolio, you can move Slices into it.
Adjust Target Percentages (in Destination Pie)
Edit your target percentages as needed. All Slices must:
Have at least 1% allocation.
Total exactly 100% for the Pie.
These changes do not trigger an account rebalance or generate trades, unless your Pie is used across multiple accounts.
Note: Adjusting target percentages only affects future deposits or withdrawals with Auto-Invest enabled. To immediately match your holdings to new targets, see: How to Rebalance Your Portfolio
Review Changes
After you set the new targets, you'll be prompted to adjust the Pie you are moving Slices out of.
Again, ensure all allocations are at least 1% and the Pie totals 100%.
Review all changes.
Confirm and Save
Click the “Confirm” button to save your changes.
Changes take effect immediately, unless you’re attempting to move Slices during a trade window. If so, wait about 30 minutes and try again.
Tip: Deleting a Slice is different from selling a Slice. To learn more: Deleting vs. Selling a Slice
What happens if a Slice is inactive?
You cannot move or update Slices that represent an inactive security (such as after a corporate action).
To remove an inactive security
Go to the portfolio’s “Invest” tab.
Tap or click “Edit.”
On mobile: Swipe up to access “Edit.”
Locate the inactive Slice.
Check the box next to it.
Tap “Delete” (on web) or “Remove” (on mobile).
Redistribute that Slice’s target percent among the remaining Slices.
You cannot save changes unless all allocations are >= 1% and total 100%.
Inactive securities must be deleted, not set to 0%.
Other key rules & situations
Rebalance orders: You cannot move Slices in or out of a Pie that is currently being rebalanced. Cancel rebalance orders first.
Pending orders: Slices with a buy or sell order cannot be moved. Wait for the order to complete or cancel it before moving.
You must keep at least one Slice in each Pie.
Utilizing the Moving Slices feature may cause trades to take place in other accounts you use the same pie in. Please visit our article on Moving Slices when Pies are used in more than one account for further information
