After M1 Advisor builds your Portfolio Alignment, you can save each account’s recommendation as a Pie and decide how to use it. This article explains how to save a Pie and what happens in your account depending on how you add it to your portfolio.
Saving a Pie doesn’t buy or sell anything. M1 Advisor can’t add Pies to your portfolio, change targets, move or remove Slices, or rebalance for you. You make any changes yourself in the M1 app.
How do I save a recommendation as a Pie?
Tell M1 Advisor which account to save or ask it to save all of them. An approval request appears in the chat for each Pie. Nothing is created until you approve, and you can decline.
The Pie is saved for the account it was designed for and has no effect until you add it to your portfolio.
How do I add the Pie to my portfolio?
Go to the Invest tab and select Portfolio.
Select Edit. On mobile, tap Manage Pie to find Edit.
Select Add Slice, choose My Pies, and select your saved Pie.
Select Done.
Set the Pie’s target allocation so your portfolio totals 100%, then save.
For more detail, see Creating and adding custom Pies to your M1 portfolio.
What to expect:
Adding the Pie and setting its target doesn’t sell any of your current holdings. Changing a Slice’s target never sells it on its own.
If Auto-Invest is on, new deposits flow into the new Pie based on its target. If Auto-Invest is off, the Pie fills only from buys you place.
Your account then holds a mix of your existing Slices and the new Pie. It matches the recommendation only once the new Pie is your account’s entire allocation.
How do I match the recommendation exactly?
To match the recommendation exactly, the new Pie needs to be your account’s entire allocation. To do that:
Add the Pie to your portfolio using the steps above.
In Edit, check the box next to each Slice you want to remove, then select Delete (web) or Remove (mobile).
Set the new Pie to 100% and save. Allocations must total exactly 100%, with each Slice at least 1%.
Before you remove anything, keep in mind:
Removing a Slice or Pie sells its holdings in the next trade window, whether or not Auto-Invest is on. This includes replacing a Pie with another Pie or with an M1 Model Portfolio. The proceeds go to your remaining Slices. Learn more in Deleting vs. selling a Slice.
If the new Pie also holds a security you’re selling in the same account, M1 nets the sale against the purchase in the same trade window, so that security isn’t sold in full. Orders in different accounts don’t net.
To avoid selling holdings the new Pie also includes, you can move them into it first. Check the box next to the Slice, select Move, and choose the new Pie. This works only within the same account, and Slices can’t be moved into or out of an M1 Model Portfolio. See How to move Slices between Pies in your M1 portfolio.
To see what would be sold in each account if you matched the recommendation exactly, ask M1 Advisor. It will list the holdings for each account.
Will this create a tax bill?
Selling in a taxable account may be a taxable event. M1 doesn’t provide tax advice, so consider talking to a tax professional before making changes.
Can I leave my portfolio as it is?
Yes. You’re never required to act on a recommendation, and nothing in your accounts changes unless you make a change yourself.
Can I change the recommendation before I save it?
Yes. Ask M1 Advisor to leave out a security or sector, swap a fund, change which accounts are included, or use a different risk level. Each change is saved as a new version, and your most recent version is the one to act on. Learn more in Portfolio Alignment with M1 Advisor.
