We’re sorry to see you go!
To transfer an M1 investment account out of M1, please contact the receiving broker (the institution where the account is going) and ask them to initiate the transfer.
Keep the following in mind regarding outgoing account transfers:
Recent account activity:
Please wait at least 6 business days from the last deposit into an investment account before initiating an account transfer.
All new deposits into M1 Invest require a 6-business day holding period before they can be withdrawn or transferred.
If you recently deposited into your account, your ACAT transfer may be rejected.
Full account transfers:
Only full shares are transferred in-kind.
Fractional shares will be liquidated to cash and swept to the receiving broker following the transfer of the full shares.
The account is automatically closed following the full account transfer.
Partial account transfers:
A partial account transfer can be requested through the receiving broker.
The full share quantity of each security you wish to transfer must be requested.
The account is temporarily paused to process the partial account transfer.
Example: Full vs. Partial account transfer
An account holds the following symbols and quantities:
Symbol | Share Quantity |
ABC | 10.7834 |
XYZ | 6.2259 |
If a full account transfer is requested, the 10 full shares of ABC and the 6 full shares of XYZ will transfer in-kind to the receiving broker. The 0.7834 fractional shares of ABC and 0.2259 fractional shares of XYZ will be liquidated to cash and swept to the receiving broker.
If a partial account transfer is requested for the 10 full shares of ABC and the 6 full shares of XYZ, only the requested full shares will transfer in-kind to the receiving broker. The 0.7834 fractional shares of ABC and 0.2259 fractional shares of XYZ will not be transferred and will remain in your M1 account.
Outgoing ACAT fee
There is a $100 outgoing ACAT fee for all account types and an additional $100 closing fee for retirement accounts.
Example:
Transferring out your Individual Brokerage Account would incur a fee of $100.
Transferring out your Roth IRA would incur a fee of $200 ($100 for the outgoing ACAT + $100 for the IRA closure fee).
A breakdown of fees can be found at M1 Fee Schedule.
Cost basis information
Apex or M1 will send cost basis information to your receiving brokerage within 30 days.
If it has been longer than 30 days since your account transfer and the receiving brokerage has not received cost basis information, please contact us.
Residual cash and share amounts
Residual cash and holdings remaining in a closed M1 account following an outgoing ACAT is typically swept up and transferred to your new brokerage within about a week of the transfer of any full shares.
When you perform a full transfer, fractional shares will be liquidated and the resulting cash will be swept to your account at your new brokerage, typically within a week of the shares being liquidated.
Residual cash and holdings that arrive in a closed M1 account, such as dividends, will be continuously swept up and automatically transferred to your new brokerage for 180 business days after your transfer completes. If it has been more than 180 days since your account transfer and the account has remaining cash or holdings, please let us know.
Account closure
We cannot re-open accounts after an ACAT transfer. However, you can open a new account here.
