Understanding performance information

Updated over 3 months ago

Finding performance data

The Portfolio tab and the Holdings tab in M1 both show you the performance of your investments. Each page has a different goal in mind so M1 uses two different calculations to show the return.

Portfolio tab: Total Gain, Market Gain, Net Cash Flow, & Money-Weighted Return

Total Gain

Total gain is your market gains / losses plus dividends earned over your selected time period. This includes:

  • Unrealized gains/losses from current positions

  • Realized gains/losses from securities sold or Slices removed

Market Gain

Market gain is the increase or decrease in value of your investment over your selected time period. Market gain is either unrealized or realized.

Net Cash Flow

Net cash flow represents the dollars you move into or out of a given Pie or Slice.

  • Net cash flow increases when you buys, reinvest dividends, and move securities into a Pie or Slice.

  • Net cash flow decreases when you sell or move securities out of a Pie or Slice.

Return

On M1, you can view your performance as one of two cumulative return metrics:

Money-Weighted Rate of Return (MWRR):

  • Helps you understand your internal rate of return (IRR)

  • Shows performance of your underlying holdings and the timing of your trades

  • Reflects the timing and size of your buys, sells, and cash flows. For example, a large purchase right before a security increases in value would increase MWRR.

Time-Weighted Rate of Return (TWRR): Coming soon

  • Helps you compare your return relative to benchmarks (e.g., 60/40 stock/bond portfolio, S&P500)

  • Shows performance of your underlying holdings and any changes to your underlying holdings over the time period

  • Excludes the impact of your buys, sells, and cash flows

Holdings tab: Unrealized Gain & Cost basis

Unrealized Gain

The Holdings tab shows the value of your current positions and their cost basis. The

difference between these two values is your unrealized gain. It does not show positions you’ve sold.

This tab's main goal is to give you a snapshot of your current positions and their potential tax liability upon sale. Unrealized gain is not a complete picture of your past performance because it excludes dividends earned and realized gains/losses.

Unrealized gain may be higher than your total gain for a few reasons, including:

  • You previously sold higher cost basis shares.

  • You transferred securities to M1. Your unrealized gain will be based on your cost basis from the date you originally purchased the shares, while your all-time total gain on M1 will start at the date you transferred your shares into your Pie on M1.

Unrealized gain (%) compares your unrealized gain vs. your cost basis. It is different than your money-weighted in a few ways:
