Your gains and losses

Updated over 3 months ago

M1 keeps track of gains and losses, so you always know how your investments are performing.

Total gain

Total gain is a combination of all market gains/losses and dividends earned over your selected time period. This includes:

  • Unrealized gains/losses from current positions

  • Realized gains/losses from securities sold or Slices removed

Unrealized gains

Unrealized gain is your potential profit or loss if you sold your position. It is intended to give you a snapshot of your potential tax liability upon sale. A gain/loss becomes realized once the position is sold for a profit/loss.

Unrealized gain is not a complete picture of your past performance because it excludes dividends and realized gains/losses.

Unrealized gain may be higher than your Total Gain for a few reasons, including:

  • You previously sold higher cost basis shares.

  • You transferred securities to M1. Your unrealized gain will be based on your cost basis from the date you originally purchased the shares, while your all-time total gain on M1 will start at the date you transferred your shares into your Pie on M1.

Formulas

Unrealized Gain/ Loss = Value of Investment - Cost of Investment

Unrealized Gain/Loss % = (Value of Investment - Cost of Investment) / Cost of Investment

Market gain

Market gain is the increase or decrease in value of your investment. Market gain is either unrealized or realized.

An unrealized market gain is a position in a stock or fund that has yet to be sold. A realized capital gain is the profit or loss experienced when a position has been both bought and sold.
