How to track the status of your brokerage account transfer

Updated over a month ago

You can easily track the progress of most full account transfers (ACATs) on your M1 account. This article explains how to view your transfer status, what each status means, what to do if more information is needed, and how to get help if your transfer exceeds the normal timeline.

How to track your transfer

Web

  1. Log in to your M1 account.

  2. On the home screen, click View All Transfers.

  3. Look for the Pending Brokerage Transfers section to view your transfer status.

  4. Click Pending Brokerage Transfers for detailed information about your transfer.

Mobile

  1. Open the M1 app.

  2. Tap View All Transfers on the home screen dashboard.

  3. Find the Pending Brokerage Transfers section.

  4. Tap it to see more details about your transfer progress.

What do transfer statuses mean?

  • Started: Your transfer request has been received and is being processed by M1.

  • Pending: The transfer has been submitted to your current brokerage and is in progress.

  • Information Needed: M1 requires additional details to complete your transfer.

Next steps:

  • Check your email inbox (and spam/junk folders) for instructions from M1—expect a message within 48 business hours.

  • Follow the instructions promptly, usually involving document submission or confirmation of account details, to avoid delays.

  • If you don’t receive an email or aren’t sure what to do, contact M1 Client Success.

Notifications and updates

  • You’ll receive notifications in your M1 account and by email at key steps:

  • When your transfer starts and when it completes.

  • If more information is needed or there’s an issue with processing.

  • When your transfer has finished, you’ll receive a confirmation email.

  • For transfers not eligible for in-app tracking (see below), M1 will email you with regular status updates.

Tracking Non-ACAT transfers

  • Non-ACAT transfers (most rollovers, some direct account transfers) may not appear under Pending Brokerage Transfers.

In these cases:

  • Track your status through email updates from M1.

  • If you want an update or haven’t received an email, contact M1 Client Success.

What happens after your transfer is complete?

When your transfer finishes:

  • Your received assets will appear in your M1 holdings, typically listed outside your Pie as Received Securities. Learn more about Holdings Not in Pies.

  • The transfer will no longer appear under Pending Brokerage Transfers.

  • A confirmation email will be sent.

  • You can review details in the Activity tab of your Invest account.

Transfer timeline expectations

  • Most ACAT transfers: 5–7 business days.

  • Non-ACAT transfers: Can take 30–60 days, depending on the sending institution.

Troubleshooting delays

If your transfer status hasn’t updated after the expected timeframe:

  • Check status on View All Transfers (web or app) and your email for any notifications from M1.

  • Make sure you provided the correct and matching account information in both M1 and your external account.

  • Confirm your external brokerage has not rejected or delayed the request (contact them if necessary).

  • If you are unsure or there is no update for more than 7 business days (ACAT) or 2 weeks (Non-ACAT), contact M1 Client Success for assistance.

Why isn’t my transfer showing?

  • Transfer tracking is only available on the web and the latest mobile app.

Tracking is not available for:

  • Brokerage firms that do not support ACATS.

  • Apex Clearing-to-Apex Cleared M1 Invest Accounts.

  • For these, check your email for updates or reach out to M1 Client Success.
