Am I eligible to open an M1 account? 

At this time, you must meet all the following criteria to open an account:  

  • United States’ citizen or permanent residents (green card holders)  
  • Age: 18+ 
  • Current US residential address 
  • US phone number 

Will M1 be available outside of the US? 

We don’t have immediate plans to expand outside the US, but we are excited to continue growing and will announce if anything changes.

How much does M1 cost to use?

Unlike other investing platforms, you’ll never be charged commissions or markups on any trades, a platform usage fee, or to deposit or withdraw from your connected bank— because we believe your money should work harder for you. 

We do have additional services offered for a fee, including our annual M1 Plus subscription. Learn more on our fees page.   

What are Pies? 

A Pie is the building block of your portfolio at M1. It’s where all your stocks and funds live. 

Pies allow you to choose your own stocks and funds to build a portfolio completely customized to your unique goals. 

You can combine your investment picks into a Pie and build your ideal long-term portfolio.  

How does Auto Invest work? 

With Auto Invest, M1 directs money from every deposit to make sure your portfolio stays on track with your targets. 

That means you can invest cash into your Pie and maintain your investment targets without any manual calculations.

What is Rebalancing? 

With M1's Dynamic Rebalancing, every trade with new cash in your portfolio pushes you closer to the target percentages you set.  

Whenever your account makes new trades, the algorithm identifies slices that are most relatively underweight and puts money in those first.

How do I initiate a brokerage transfer into M1? 

We’re happy to hear you’re interested in a transfer! To initiate a transfer: 

  1. Open the desired account type at M1
  2. Navigate to the Home tab and select “Move Money
  3. Select "Transfer from another brokerage"

Why is my account rejected? 

Common reasons clients are “rejected” include:  

  • A security freeze  
  • A typo in your personal information  
  • You are between the age of 18-23  
  • You don’t have a credit history

How do I open an additional account?

Open an additional M1 Invest Account here.

Please note: It may take up to 24 hours to be able to open an additional account type after opening your M1 Individual Brokerage Account or IRA. At this time, you can only open an IRA as your first M1 Invest Account on Web.

How do I connect and verify my bank? 

You can connect your bank through plaid or manually with microdeposits. Learn how to connect and verify your bank. 

Note: Make sure that your bank is supported by M1. You can only connect to one bank account. Learn more about changing your bank connection 


Trading at M1 

How does trading at M1 work? 

The trade window is the window of time each weekday when M1 makes all trades for client accounts.  

M1 has 2 trading windows: 

  • 9:30am ET 
  • 3:00pm ET

How do I trade with Auto-Invest? 

Most M1 clients manage their portfolio with Auto-Invest turned on.  

With Auto-Invest on, any time your cash balance meets or exceeds $25, M1 will automatically invest your cash balance into your portfolio.   

To select this option, turn Auto-Invest on and set your minimum cash balance to $0.

Can you still place manual trades? 

M1 allows you to place individual orders to buy or sell stocks directly from specific Slices of your portfolio. 

To place an order: 

  1. Select the desired Slice of your Pie 
  2. Choose Buy/Sell 
  3. Confirm your order details.

Is M1 a robo advisor? 

M1 is not a robo advisor. M1 does not place trades for you. The platform empowers you to make trades based on your Auto Invest settings. 


Managing account 

How can I change my account information (email, phone number, password)? 

Please submit a request to change the account information associated with your M1 account.  

You’ll have to upload a photo of a non-expired government-issued photo ID. Once we verify your identity, we will be able to make your requested changes.

How can I set up recurring transfers? 

You can set up recurring transfers into your M1 Finance account through the Invest tab or from "Move Money" located on the Home screen.

Is M1 insured? 

Your security is our priority. We are a registered broker/dealer with FINRA and a member of SIPC.  

SIPC (Securities Investor Protection Corporation) protects against the loss of cash and stocks you hold. 

Member of SIPC, which protects securities customers of its members up to $500,000 (including $250,000 for claims for cash). Explanatory brochure available upon request or at  

SIPC does not protect you from any decline in the value of your securities.  

Certain accounts clearing through Apex Clearing also have supplemental insurance if SIPC limits are exhausted.

In the event of insolvency at Apex Clearing, claims that exceed the standard SIPC limits may be able to make a claim against Apex Clearing under their excess insurance policy. That excess SIPC policy has an aggregate limit of $150 million across all Apex Clearing accounts, subject to sub-limits per each individual customer of $37.5 million for securities and $900,000 for cash to protect customer assets. 

Since cryptocurrencies are not covered securities, Crypto Accounts are not protected by SIPC insurance.


Is my information safe with M1? 

Yes. All data transferred and stored within our systems is protected with military-grade 4096-bit encryption.

How do I enable 2FA? 

Two-factor authentication (2FA) is the most secure way to identify you and protect your account. 

After entering your password, you’ll submit a second piece of information that lets us know it’s you logging in. 

The second piece of information is normally an answer to a question, or a code sent to your mobile device.

How do I change my password? 

Please visit our website to reset your password. 

If you are unable to reset your password, contact us! 


*Participate in both trade windows when you have $25,000 or more equity to comply with
pattern-day trading regulations.

*M1 Margin Loans are available on margin accounts with at least $2,000 invested per account. Not all securities are available for M1 Margin Loans and the amount that may be borrowed against a security is subject to change without notice. Available margin amount(s) of M1 Margin Loans may require greater than $2,000 per Brokerage Account. Not available for Retirement and Custodial accounts. Margin rates may vary.

You can take an M1 Margin Loan of up to 40% of your portfolio value at 8.75% interest rate, or 7.25% if you are an M1 Plus member*. 

***Owner’s Rewards cannot be paid out to an M1 Traditional IRA, Roth IRA, SEP IRA, Trust Account or Custodial Account.

Owner's Rewards Card by M1 not available for US Territory Residents. 1.5%-10% credit card cash back rewards earned on eligible purchases subject to a maximum of $200 cash back per calendar month. Review Cardholder Agreement and Rewards Terms for important information about the Owner’s Rewards Card by M1. The Owner’s Rewards Card by M1 is Powered by Deserve and issued by Celtic Bank, a Utah-Chartered Industrial Bank, Member FDIC.
