Edit your M1 Portfolio

Updated over a month ago

You have complete control over your M1 Invest portfolio. You can add, remove, or adjust Slices (your stocks, ETFs, or Pies) at any time to align your investments with your financial goals.

This article explains each type of edit you might make to your portfolio, how to do it, and important rules to remember.

Key points before you start

  • Maximum Slices: Each portfolio (Pie) can have up to 100 Slices.

  • Allocations: Total target percentages for all Slices must equal 100%. Each Slice must be set to at least 1%.

  • Order Minimums: Buy orders must be at least $1.00 per security.

  • Model Portfolios: M1 Model Portfolios cannot be modified. You cannot add, remove, or move Slices within these.

  • Inactive Securities: Securities may become inactive due to events like corporate actions. You cannot save a Pie that contains an inactive security—removal is required.

Note: Adjusting your target percentages does not automatically rebalance your investments. To bring your portfolio holdings in line with your new targets, you’ll need to initiate a rebalance. Learn more about rebalancing on M1.

Add Slices to your portfolio

Add Slices to diversify your investments or take advantage of new opportunities.

Web

  1. Log in and navigate to the Invest tab.

  2. Select your desired Portfolio.

  3. Click Edit

  4. Click Add Slice button.

  5. Search for and select stocks, ETFs, or Pies you want to add.

  6. Adjust the target percentages for your new and existing Slices. Total must equal 100%.

  7. Click Save.

Mobile (iOS & Android)

  1. Open the M1 app.

  2. Go to the Invest tab.

  3. Swipe up at the bottom to reveal the actions panel.

  4. Tap Edit.

  5. Tap Add Slice.

  6. Search and select investments to add, and tap Done.

  7. Adjust target percentages, then tap Save.

Note: After adding Slices and saving changes, your buys will be made over time as new money is invested, especially if Auto-invest is enabled.

Remove Slices from your portfolio

You can remove investments to simplify your Pie, decrease exposure, or eliminate underperforming holdings.

To remove a Slice:

Option 1: Delete a Slice (Automatic reallocation)

  • Set the Slice’s target percentage to 0%.

  • Adjust the percentages of your remaining Slices so the total is 100%.

  • Save changes.

Funds from the deleted Slice will be automatically reallocated to the remaining Slices based on their target percentages.

Tip: If you change your mind before an order goes through, you can re-add the security to your Pie to cancel the pending sale due to a Slice removal.

Option 2: Manually Sell a Slice (Proceeds go to cash)

  1. Select the Slice you want to remove.

  2. Select Sell

  3. Enter the full value of the Slice.

  4. Confirm

  5. After the sale is complete, set the Slice’s target percentage to 0% and save changes.

Proceeds will be added to your account's cash and follow your Auto-invest settings.

Removing inactive securities

If a holding becomes inactive (e.g., due to a corporate action):

  1. Go to Invest > Portfolio.

  2. Click or tap Edit.

  3. Locate the inactive Slice (typically labeled as inactive).

  4. Select or check the box next to the Slice.

  5. Click Delete (Web) or Remove (Mobile).

  6. Reallocate the freed percentage among your other Slices.

  7. Save.

Warning: You cannot save your updated Pie until all percentages total 100% and no inactive securities remain.

Change target percentages

Update target percentages to change how much of your portfolio is allocated to each investment.

  • From Edit Portfolio, use the “+” and “–” buttons or manually adjust the numbers for each Slice.

  • Make sure the total equals 100%.

  • Save changes.

Note: Changing target percentages alone will not sell or buy immediately. Want to instantly match your new targets? Learn about rebalancing.

Temporarily stop investing in a Slice (Without selling)

If you want to keep a security in your Pie but don’t want new funds directed to it:

  • Set its target percentage to the minimum (1%).

  • Auto-invest will only allocate to this Slice if its actual percentage falls below 1%.

  • This does not trigger any sells but will slow or stop new investments into that security unless you specifically direct cash toward it.

Rename your portfolio

Give your Pie a custom name so it’s easy to track.

Web

  1. Go to Invest > Portfolio.

  2. Click Edit.

  3. Click the current Pie name to edit.

  4. Type the new name.

  5. Click Continue and confirm.

Mobile

  1. Open the app and go to Invest > Portfolio.

  2. Swipe up to see more options, then tap Edit.

  3. Tap the current Pie name, then enter a new name.

  4. Tap Done.

  5. Tap Save.

Moving Slices between Pies

You can move Slices to reorganize how your investments are structured, but there are important rules:

  • Moving Slices is only available on the web platform.

  • If a Pie is used in multiple accounts, moving Slices may trigger trades in all those accounts.

  • Securities received from corporate actions or transfers cannot be moved into Pies used in multiple accounts.

Web

  1. Go to Invest > Portfolio.

  2. Click Edit.

  3. Select the Box next to the Slice

  4. Select Move

  5. Select the desired location for the Slice

  6. Update Target Percentages

  7. Click Continue and confirm.

Note: Slices are only able to be moved between Pies in the same Portfolio. They cannot be moved between accounts.
